Share your inner world, not just your day

Most couples exchange information — how work went, what needs doing — but rarely share their inner experience. What excited you today? What made you anxious? What are you currently thinking about at 2am? Sharing the inner world is what emotional intimacy is built from.

Ask questions that go beneath the surface

Questions like 'How was your day?' produce surface answers. Questions like 'What's something you've been chewing on lately?' or 'What's something you're proud of that you haven't told me?' invite depth. Better questions produce more intimate conversations.

Practice being received, not just received gracefully

Emotional intimacy requires both partners to take risks — sharing things that feel vulnerable — and to receive what the other shares with genuine care. If one partner keeps sharing while the other deflects, the intimacy asymmetry will eventually feel lonely for the sharer.

Emotional intimacy grows when each partner feels genuinely witnessed — noticed, remembered, acknowledged. Reflecting back what you see in your partner ('I've noticed how hard you've been working on this'), referencing what they shared last week — these acts of witnessing build intimacy quietly and consistently.
